Welcome to the July 2022 edition of the Pulse. It’s hard to believe, but we are now more than halfway through 2022!

For this issue, we decided to highlight team photos from our June events internally announcing our new name and brand as San Joaquin Health Centers (SJ Health).

It was great to see so many of you at the various events. We missed those of you who were unable to attend and are available to answer any questions you might have.

We are now all brand ambassadors for SJ Health. Please consider how you will reflect our corporate values and brand objectives in your daily work. Remember, our brand is more than the new logo and name on our signage, marketing materials, and work apparel. We want those we engage with – patients, partners, and the community – to know that we’re inclusive, collaborative, and compassionate as we deliver care.

With the brand launched internally, we are now shifting our focus to getting the word out to our patients and the broader community. You will be hearing and seeing more about these exciting efforts in the weeks and months ahead.

Also exciting is that this month’s employee spotlight introduces Dr. Jonathon Diulio as SJ Health’s new medical director of ambulatory quality. Dr. Diulio will be playing a vital role as physician champion for quality initiatives and will be working closely with SJ Health’s established clinical quality team and with all our care teams. We’re confident Dr. Diulio will make a big impact in how we manage performance improvement and in our quality metric results.

It has been quite a ride for all of us at SJ Health so far this year. We’ve been excited to get many strategic initiatives underway, and to welcome several team members to help us in our efforts. As of July 1, we began our 2022-2023 Fiscal Year with a growth-oriented budget recently approved by SJ Health’s Board of Directors and the County Board of Supervisors. I hope you’re finding your work and contributions to our goals rewarding and are finding success pursuing your own personal goals for 2022.

As always, thank you for being part of the SJ Health team and please let me know if there is anything you would like to see in the Pulse going forward.

Dr. Diulio Steps Up to Lead Quality Efforts

A key focus for SJ Health is quality improvement, so we’re pleased to announce Jonathon Diulio, MD, as our newly appointed medical director of ambulatory quality. Dr. Diulio will be working with the clinical quality team, primary care providers, and others throughout the organization to document and improve patient safety and patient outcomes.

Many French Camp team members already know Dr. Diulio as a primary care provider and sports medicine physician at our French Camp site for the past four years.

Dr. Diulio grew up in Southern California but went on to play football at Widener University in Pennsylvania. After completing his family medicine residency at Texas Tech University, Health Sciences Center, El Paso (where he was chief resident), Dr. Diulio completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has been working at San Joaquin Health Centers since.

It was at Widener U. where he met his wife-to-be in biology lab. The Diulios now have two children (a five-year old daughter and a daughter turning four in August). Making their home in Stockton, Dr. Diulio considers boating in the Delta to be among his primary hobbies and loves “Rocky” movies in the rare times he can relax and unwind to a movie.

In the days ahead, be sure to introduce yourself to Dr. Diulio, wish him well in his new role, and give him a “Yo, Adrian!”

Growth-Oriented Fiscal Year 2022-2023 SJ Health Budget

Over the last two months, SJ Health leadership presented the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget to the SJ Health Center Board of Directors and the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors for approval. The budget, unanimously approved by both bodies, took effect on July 1.

The budget projects $49.2 million in total revenue, an increase of over $9 million in revenue over our last fiscal year and includes patient revenues from a projected 149,152 visits during the year. Also contributing to revenues are the Quality Incentive Payment (QIP) program, capitation payments and incentive revenues based on an estimated 42,000 managed care patients, grants, and other miscellaneous revenues.

At $47 million, total expenses are budgeted to increase $8.9 million over FY 2021-2022. Salaries and benefits represent nearly 75% of the budgeted total expenses with professional fees, purchased services, depreciation, supplies, and other expenses combining for the rest.

We’re pleased to note that the SJ Health team is budgeted to grow from 177 to 204 staff (full time equivalents) over the course of the fiscal year. This includes seven new providers, eight new medical assistants and fifteen support staff for revenue cycle, information technology, and patient registration. Also aligned with our strategic goals, this budget includes revenues and expenses associated with the opening of two new healthcare access points: a mobile health center and a fixed-site health center in Manteca.

We appreciate the demonstrated support for continued growth by our board of directors. Collectively our board, staff, strategic plan, brand platform, and allocated resources are aligned in the new fiscal year to ensure forward progress toward achieving our mission and vision.

SJ Health Welcomes Incoming Residents

San Joaquin General Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education programs welcome new residents every July 1. Under the direction of Elyas Parsa, DO, program director for the SJGH Family Medicine Residency Program, and Syung Jung, MD, program director for the SJGH Internal Medicine Residency Program, the residents receive training and provide care at SJ Health sites throughout their residency.

SJ Health welcomes our eight new family medicine interns and twelve new internal medicine interns for the new year. We thank them for their role in improving access to high quality care for our patients, and hope they enjoy their experience and learning opportunity with the SJ Health team!
